This is a list of recurring characters with major contributions in the Assassin's Creed series. Note that while many of the characters are based on actual historical figures, some of them are fictional.
The Assassins are the anti-hero and primary protagonist of the series. The Assassin Order, also known at various times as the Assassin Brotherhood, during the pre-Industrial eras; Liberalis Circulum (Circle of Liberals), during classical Roman times; or Hashshashin (users of Hashish), ), during the High Middle Ages, was an organized order of assassins and sworn enemies of the Templars', against whom they fought a continuous, recondite war, throughout the entirety of recorded human history. Whereas the Templars' sought the power to save humanity from itself by controlling free will, the Assassin Order fought to ensure the survival of free will, as it allowed for the progression of new ideas and the growth of individuality. The Assassins, if not the order itself, had existed since at least 456 BCE, throughout the Roman era, the Middle Ages, the Italian Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution and into the 21st century.
Desmond Miles (voiced by Nolan North and modeled on Francisco Rendez) (1987-2012) is the main protagonist of the series. He is the descendant of three key Assassins: Altaïr ibn-La'Ahad, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, and Ratohnhaké:ton. Desmond grew up hiding from Templars with his assassin family. However, he soon became disillusioned with his life and escaped. The Miles family has a highly multiracial lineage, with European (British & Italian), Middle Eastern (Syrian), and Native American (Mohawk) roots.
Altaïr ibn-La'Ahad, (Arabic: الطائر ابن لا أحد (aṭ-ṭāʾir ibn lā ʾaḥad) "The Eagle, Son of No One") (voiced by Philip Shahbaz in Assassin's Creed and by Cas Anvar in Assassin's Creed: Revelations and modeled on the face of Francisco Randez) (1165–1257) usually known by the mononym Altaïr, is the main protagonist of Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles, Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines, Assassin's Creed: The Secret Crusade and the primary supplemental character in Assassin's Creed: Revelations. He is an Assassin, whose birthday is January 11, 1165 and who lived during the third Crusade. The name Altaïr (الطائر) means "The Bird" in Arabic and is subject to a huge misunderstanding by people who want to believe it means "The Eagle". However, in Arabic, al-Nisr (النسر) is the correct translation of the eagle. The name ibn La-Ahad means "Son of no one" in Arabic, although the accuracy of the translation is heavily questioned. Additionally, Ben Reeves of Game Informer adds that the "name of the top assassin [...] is also the name of a star in the constellation Aquila – Aquila being another name meaning eagle. Not coincidentally Ezio is the Italian form of a Greek name that also means "eagle". Altaïr is an ancestor of Desmond Miles.
