It is the first installment in the Resident Evil film series, which is based on the Capcom survival horror video game series Resident Evil. Borrowing elements from the video games Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2, the film follows amnesia heroine Alice and a band of Umbrella Corporation commandos as they attempt to contain the outbreak of the T-Virus at a secret underground facility. The film received many negative reviews from critics but was commercially successful, grossing more than $102 million worldwide. In Raccoon City, there is a top-secret genetic research facility station manufactured and controlled by the Umbrella Corporation, called The Hive. One day, in The Hive, a thief steals and in an effort to cover their tracks, throws a vial of the T-Virus, a genetically constructed mutating virus, into a lab, causing the vial to break and the virus to spread around the lab and into the air vents. The escape of the virus causes the facility's artificial intelligence, the Red Queen, to detect possible infection inside the Hive. The Red Queen seals the Hive, trapping and killing everyone inside.
