Read more about Samantha Carter at: Wikipedia Official Site: MGM Samantha "Sam" Carter is a fictional character in the Canadian-American military science fiction television series Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, as well as Stargate Universe. SG-1 and Atlantis both are a science fiction show about a military team exploring the galaxy via a network of alien transportation devices. Carter is played by an English-Canadian actress Amanda Tapping, Carter was a main character in all ten seasons of Stargate SG-1 (1997–2007). Following a recurring role in Stargate Atlantis for three seasons (2004–2007), Carter became a main character in season 4 of Atlantis (2007–2008), and also appeared in the 2008 direct-to-DVD SG-1 films Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum. Amanda Tapping accepted a starring role in Sanctuary and only appears in the first and last episodes in the fifth season of Atlantis (2008–2009). Captain Samantha Carter makes her first appearance in "Children of the Gods", the pilot episode of Stargate SG-1, as a United States Air Force captain who joins the fictional SG-1 team under the lead of Colonel Jack O'Neill. Being promoted to major in season 3, Carter remains his second-in-command until her promotion to lieutenant-colonel early in season 8. Carter assumes command of the SG-1 team in season 8. At the start of season 9, Carter has moved to a research position in Area-51, however she joins SG-1 on several missions now under the command of Cameron Mitchell. Following the defeat of the Ori threat in Stargate: The Ark of Truth, Carter is promoted to a "full bird" colonel and is appointed as the new commander of the Atlantis expedition early in season 4 of Atlantis. Overall, Carter has appeared in the most episodes of Stargate, though not the most of SG-1 (this honor goes to Teal'c, owing to Tapping's four-episode maternity leave in season 9). Before the present-time events of Stargate SG-1, Samantha Carter worked at the Pentagon for several years, trying to get the Stargate operational. She has a Ph.D. in theoretical astrophysics and "logged over 100 hours in enemy airspace" during the Gulf War. She is the daughter of Major General Jacob Carter, and has a brother named Mark. Her mother died in a car accident when she was a teenager. |
