Read more about Patrick Jane at: Wikipedia Official Site: CBS Patrick Jane is the protagonist of the popular CBS series The Mentalist and is portrayed by Simon Baker. Jane is a consultant for the fictionalized "California Bureau of Investigation" and helps by giving advice and insight from his many years as a fake psychic medium. He uses his keen powers of observation, deduction, and knowledge of social engineering coupled with his genius to help lead the investigation. Not much is known about Jane's childhood, or the time period prior to the first episode, apart from the events of Red John. However, Jane stated once that he "never went to high school". In the Season 2 episode "Throwing Fire," it is revealed that Jane is the son of a crooked carnival worker, Alex Jane, who used Jane's abilities to swindle people out of money. When Jane refuses to con a dying girl into buying a "magic" crystal that supposedly will cure her, Jane's father gives him an ultimatum: he can continue their con games, or leave. Patrick decides to stay and unwillingly helps con the girl and her grandmother, accepting a cut of the money. In the Season 3 episode "Cackle-Bladder Blood" it is revealed that Jane's wife, Angela Ruskin Jane, was "carnival royalty" and had a con artist brother named Danny Ruskin whom she had to bail out of jail on her wedding day. Angela disliked life on the carnival circuit, as did Jane, and they escaped it together. Patrick Jane was a semi-famous celebrity, having made a very comfortable living as a psychic/medium even while aware he was taking advantage of peoples' belief in his false "gifts". From flashbacks and dialogue, the audience learns of his past. In several flashbacks throughout the first season, Jane is shown hosting a show where he supposedly contacts the dead relatives of various audience members. One flashback shows Jane mocking the serial killer "Red John," showing Jane as someone (over)confident in his abilities, but not mindful of the consequences. This is contrasted with Jane's later persona that, while decidedly cocky, is clearly aware his actions can (and do) have consequences. Things were fine for Jane until he criticized and openly mocked "Red John". When Jane returned home, he was horrified to discover that the killer was angry for being singled out and raked over the coals on national television, so he murdered Jane's wife, Angela, and young daughter, Charlotte, in revenge. As a result of his self-imposed complicity in the killings, Jane apparently had a mental breakdown and was hospitalized. When he recovered and was released, he fought to keep his breakdown a secret and managed to keep it off his records, as he was deeply ashamed of it. When he finally opened up to Lisbon (on a case where his psychiatrist was the prime suspect) Jane said he knew the breakdown was nothing to be ashamed of, but felt shame nonetheless. He still wears his wedding ring and maintains his "married" status regarding relationships, having turned down women insisting "I'm married". He seems to be moving past this towards the end of the second series, however, asking Kristina Fry (a claimed psychic) out for coffee, after several of his colleagues have noticed that he likes her, but this potential relationship is put on hold when she is kidnapped by Red John. In the third season episode "Cackle-Bladder Blood" Jane visits his wife and daughter's graves for the first time since their funeral and apologizes to his brother-in-law for the actions that led to their deaths.
Patrick Jane has not been a contender in any CBUB matches.
