The series debuted with the Nintendo 64 video game Perfect Dark in 2000, which received strong acclaim from critics and players, leading to the franchise's expansion. In September 2002, Rare was acquired by Microsoft Game Studios. Because of this, the development turned to Microsoft video game consoles and, since then, the Perfect Dark franchise has grown to include a number of other types of merchandise. The series centers on a struggle between powerful megacorporations and their sinister collaborations with extraterrestrials to achieve world domination in a near future Earth.
