He was originally created as a character for the Sunbow cartoon series in 1984, and later produced as an action figure, and finally introduced into the comic book in 1985. Flint hails from Wichita, Kansas. He is a Rhodes Scholar and holds a degree in English literature. He graduated with top honors from Airborne School, Ranger School, Special Forces School and Flight Warrant Officers School. As a master tactician, he also oversaw several strategically important rescue missions. Because of his credentials, Duke brought him in to the G.I. Joe Team. Flint's action figure card describes him as a "Warrant Officer" but his character profile states his grade as E-6 for his original release. All subsequent releases give him a Rank of WO-2. It has been rumored that he was named after G.I. Joe series writer Flint Dille. Flint's real name was supposedly taken after Dashiell Hammett, author of The Maltese Falcon.
