Where to put it, where to put it .ah! Right here next to our family photo. Hmmm ..no, it shouldn t go there, it just doesn t seem right. Where in the hell do you put an AA graduation certificate? I ll be going out of my mind for days trying to put this thing somewhere where my kid can see it. When I got this certificate I rushed right over here skipping the graduation lunch so that I could hang it up, invite my kid over for dinner on the off chance that he would see it and be proud of me. You know it s funny to think I have to invite my kid to dinner now, I guess after all they ve had to put up with, I deserve it. This thing doesn t represent much, just my stupid attempt to pick up the pieces. I grab the certificate and shove it into the kitchen drawer and I move down to my bedroom. I go to my closet and remove the double wood paneling to reveal my costume. I look at it and I put it on. I proceed to move around my very cramped apartment doing fly kicks and other martial arts moves. You know what the hardest part of this whole new me thing is, I have to give up being a hero. I m reduced to fighting imaginary scenarios in my living room.

It was alcohol that fueled my powers. When I drank I became super strong and super agile, I don t know why this happened but it did. It all started at a college party where I met my wife. I see this guy being a jerk to this really pretty girl. So I go over and tell him that he needs to lay off. He goes for a punch at me and I tell you, it seemed like the slowest thing coming at me. It was so slow that I could see the veins in his knuckles pulsating and I dodge it, and then punch him into the couch he was sitting in. So through dates to follow and other parties she and I fall in love. At the same time I test the limits of my powers, beating up random thieves, leaping from and across buildings, running and swimming while drunk for hours without fatigue, I even take some karate classes. Finally, I reveal my powers to her and she tells me the world needs heroes, I agree. I become Suiken without letting people know how I get my powers. But 10 years and one kid later, she s telling me I need to be more of a father, less of a drunk. In effect, she s telling me to be less of a hero.

Back in the Act

     Acrobat: superior (rank 2)

I get out the door and take my old leaping from building to building route and I'm immediately filled with joy. I feel true power coursing through my body as I jump higher than I ever have before from rooftop to rooftop. I'm doing front tuck rolls, somersaults, bouncing all around feeling like a kid on a trampoline for the first time. As my feet leave the pavement each time I try to leap higher to swipe the clouds above me. I feel the rum working its way through my system making me stronger and more focused. When it finally seeps into my toes I feel a tingle race up my spine mid flip that almost makes me slip and fall over. I stop for a second and revel in the feeling of danger, this is much better than what the apartment would allow. This is pure ecstasy, I slowly feel the worries of my family slipping away as I see the bank robbery scene in front of me.

As I land, people cheer. This is what I imagined it to be. There are news cameras, officers in awe, the total hero s welcome. I m home. I give a quick wave and get back down to business, I talk to the officer in charge and she tells me that there are five robbers with heavy artillery and 10 hostages, no problem. I clench my fists and let out a quick rum burp as I sprint and leap toward the roof and punch the door in. I feel a smile creeping up my face as I see the first robber patrolling the upper level. I run at him quickly and give him a flying jump kick I practiced in the living room earlier. He goes out cold. I move down to the lower level and see 3 more robbers and most of the hostages. It was very stupid at the moment but I throw the gun of the first robber at a lighting fixture to create a diversion and as it drops and creates a commotion I leap straight down to tackle one robber into the marble flooring. The other two catch wind of my actions and start firing at me like mad men. I run across the wall to dodge it and move into a back flip as the robbers scramble to reload. I yell a sound, it was uh, like, YEEEEHOOOOOOOO as my back flip turned into a double kick in the face.

I find the last guy hunkered in the vault. I stroll in to give him a cliché' hero line and he shoots me. Too bad for him, because if you're quick enough to actually hit me in this state, the alcohol goes to my head and it makes me pissed off. My muscles swell up and I throw him through the doors of the bank with the other four in hand. The news reporters barrage me and say things like "We missed you!" and "Our man is back!" My smile grows from ear to ear and I feel this burst of excitement that explodes from inside me as I tell people how happy I am to be back and tell them that I had some growing up to do before I could return. It finally hits me that I've made the right decision, I look around and I see all of these people adoring me for what I do, appreciating me.

I'm sad to leave but I do, and I return home and it hits me that I missed a call on the way out. I see...my wife called me twice and left 2 voice mails. The first one is about how she missed me and how proud she was of me, she wanted to talk about getting back together. The second one simply says, "Saw the news, never mind." I slip to the ground, and I think to myself, "At least I can still be a hero, and my while my son can't look up to me, he can look up to Suiken."I put on my mask and hit the city, hoping that I made the right choice.
