The Rookie

At first it’s dark and then green, the sort neon green that they use to color lime slushies. My eyes refuse to open as I feel weightless. My arms and legs move as if I’m suspended in mid air. Gravity’s weight is no longer on my shoulders. At first it feels ok, like I’ve somehow returned to the womb. Around me is what I can only describe as warmth and nourishment. The only movement I force upon myself is in my fingers and toes. The wriggle as I start to feel a tingling sensation in the rest of my body. It starts in the tips of my toes, slowly goes up my legs and past my hips. Once it hits my chest it starts to burn and scorch around my arms like a wildfire. When I start to feel it in my neck I begin to panic and when it finally touches the top of my head my eyes finally open.

I reach out in a panic but the palms of my hands only touch glass. I try and scream but in my mouth gushes tasteless fluid. I slam my fist on the glass as I desperately want to break free, the sound of voices from a distance emanating from behind me.

“She’s excelling to the testing at an alarming rate.”

“But didn’t they say she was experiencing some level of trauma?”

“The advance learning device has some bugs but it’s not something some mental conditioning can’t fix.”

As the voices grow louder and louder I begin to slam my fists into the glass harder and harder. My chest starts to heave as I try and breathe through the viscous liquid I’m in. Each fist making the cracks bigger, stretch out longer like long spider webs. I pull both of my fists back and slam as hard as I can when the glass suddenly shatters. Large sheets of glass start falling from the sky in a seemingly endless cascade. The green all around me slowly flows away and disappears as I feel it drain under my neck. When it finally does I grab my head screaming, closing my eyes for a moment as I drop down to my knees.

When I finally open them again I see a man in front of me buttoning his shirt up. My own blouse undone, my skirt a mess as I wonder what the hell is going on.

I begin to panic. My head was throbbing and I wanted to throw up from the disorientation I was experiencing. The room was jumping all around as I started to fix my clothes. I didn’t dare stand up. My legs were feeling like Jell-O. As I looked harder at the man I tried to piece together his face. He was handsome and familiar. I looked around the darkened room, a fancy bed room that I had only a scant recollection of. He leaned over and kissed me softly on my lips as I started to return it in a rough fashion. Instinct seemed to be getting the better of me.

“You sure know how to keep up a ruse. I’ll check up on you in the morning.”

I sat up on the bed looking around. I kept trying to remember what was going on, who that man was. Images started to slowly flow into my head, of a desert, of a stone tablet. Reaching into my blouse I began to fumble with my bra till I found what I was looking for, a key card. Staring at it I started to hold it up as its image began to tremble and shake. My arms felt still but my eyes kept moving the object as though it was vibrating until all of the sudden it stopped. The card appeared clear and still as I slide it back into my bra and made her way out of the bedroom.

As I Close the door behind me she I surveyed around the intricate hallway with plush red carpets and mahogany trim. Making my to the left I was startled by a voice.

“Up and about?”

She looked over at the man who had been in the bedroom with her as she said “Stewart I…”

“Bathroom is first left then your immediate right.”

Turning around I began to walk past him as he grabbed my arm.

“I think you dropped this on the way up here.” He was holding a handkerchief that my brain just couldn’t remember.

“I really don’t think that’s mine.”

“It has your monogram on it. See, BB.”

A sharp pain hits my forehead as I pull myself out of his grip. “Sorry, I really need to go.”

I start to walk faster towards the bathroom.

Mouse

     Tactician: standard (rank 1)

As I quickly run to the bathroom I start to put my plan into action. I grab a waste basket and flip it over right away. Trying to step on it I reach up to the air duct I remember from the mansion schematics. As I watch the grate loosen I suddenly feel a force on my shoulders. Suddenly I’m dragged down onto the floor as I curse out loud.

“God damn it!” I start to thrash like a maniac as I can feel myself being pulled towards the door way that opens up. As I’m forced to my feet I pull my right foot up and slam it hard down onto the floor. The howl of pain echoes through the back of my skull as I feel the weight jump onto my back. My eyes close, I feel like I’m about to black out again as I grow desperate to get free.

Spinning like a top I ram my back up against the wall. I hear the crack of the mirror and I think to myself success!” I keep spinning and smacking as I feel this person’s hands cover my eyes. Tiles break, dry wall cracks, doors are slammed into each one eliciting a low guttural grunt until finally I feel their weight off of my back.

Not thinking twice and not looking back I quickly climb the waste basket into the duct, making sure to pull the grate closed behind me.

Dance of Blades

     Piercing Weapon: standard (rank 1)

  • Area Affect
  • Multi-Attack

The sharp tearing of a bullet hit me right in my shoulder as I scream out loud, my yell echoing in the cavernous metal tunnel way of the airduct. How did they manage to hit me? Not matter, they can’t be far away and now I got them where I want them. I clasp my hands together, concentrating as the knives from under my dress fly out and start to cut though the metal underneath me. As soon as they do they fly towards the floor as I watch my assailant stumble away in the hall.

I drop to the floor as I summon my knives to circle me again. Twisting and turning as I rush towards my attacker, trying to slide them to ribbons I watch as pieces of her clothes shred and tear from the tips of my blades. My feet light on the floor as I grab two of the knives in mid air and start slashing and stabbing at my opponent.

I get fancy, I get cocky, I guess that’s why I didn’t see the upper cut smack me hard in my chin.

Gymnast

     Acrobat: standard (rank 1)

After the first few blows I realize I can’t keep on being a human punching bag. When I get my bearing straight I grab her arm on the wrist and elbow flipping over her back as I shove hard. The poor sucker is sent sprawling to the floor, spinning around quickly to face me as I land on my feet. She puts her fist up again and she comes at me with all that she’s got. This time however I’m ready. Each blow misses, glances my cheek as I flip and bounce off the walls. She finally goes for one hay maker and I simply tilt my head back letting it just nip my nose.

The moon light casts over the two of us from a large bay window as I look at her stepping into it. As she does I start to move closer clutching onto my knife. Just as I think I’m going to see her face she grabs her head screaming out as she stumbles back into the darkness. I think she’s gone mad when all of the sudden the piercing buzz begins to echo in my head as well.

Dead Ringer

     Duplication: standard (rank 1)

When the buzzing stops I put my fists up and go to attack her. I know I can’t fail, I know I must stop her in some way. She’s still grabbing her head stumbling into the moon light when I pull my fist up and am about to strike until I finally see her face. I stop; my mouth is wide open as I am unable to breathe. It’s like looking into mirror, her hair a shade of black and an eye patch over her eye but she looked exactly like me, my dead ringer. I can see that she’s staring back at me in just as much shock as I am before it seems like reality gets to her before it does to me. Turning to the window she throws her knives crashing it down as she jumps out escaping into the night.
