They say that Philadelphia is widely known for its City of Brotherly Love. Funny since Robert Remington and I haven’t been that loved since the both of us got here. Ever since we came to this city, all we have done is beat down bikers to threaten rich douche bags in polo shirts, all of this just to get information for something that we use to know. It wasn’t too long ago that Dr. Ibermann, my father and self-appointed ruler of his twisted utopia, erased a portion of our memories keeping his precious little town a secret. All of this made possible because I refused to see an innocent man die. Because of my little defiance towards my family, I am now exiled from the place I grew up in. But all of that changes tonight because he may have erased that part of my memory, but not everything else that I know about him and his black market operations. Like his businesses with high-powered executives that they run for him as a front to fund his plans. “This is the place?” I ask Robert as the two of us stand across the street from one of the skyscrapers.

“Yeah,” Robert replied, “According to my people, and the thugs we’ve tussled with earlier, they’ve cross referenced the information giving us this place. Why, you been here before?”

“Not really,” I answered, “But I know of this place. Displace Enterprise is one of the most successful private military companies in North America with its specialties in security defenses and private protection.”

He rolls his eyes at me knowing full well that this is going to be one hell of a night. “Great this is gonna be one helluva night.” Oh wow, I didn’t see that one coming. Either I have psychic powers or I’ve just been hanging out with him for to long. You know, I think it probably is the second one.

I give Robert a pat on the shoulder as I try to explain the plan again. “Relax, big guy. You’re providing the distraction here tonight. I’m the one who’s going to be doing all of the heavy lifting.”

Robert smiles and nods his head at me as we make our way across the street. “Hey Mary, there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you. If by chance that things don’t go well tonight, I was wondering about something. How did you get your abilities? I know that we Metans normally get our powers through an unexpected event in our lives. I’m just curious what did you do to make you have ghostly powers.”

Great, he has to bring that up now? That’s the last thing I need right is to remember one of the worst moments as a kid. I knew I should have never entered Jack Crawford’s lab that day.

*************************

Thirteen Years Ago:

A young Mary wakes up from her bed as she screams out in horror. That is, until she finally stops and takes a quick glance realizing she is in a hospital room. As she tries to pull the iv tubes out of her arm, she is quickly stopped by Jack Crawford.

“Wha-What’s going on? Where am I?”

“Shh, calm down Mary. Everything will be alright. You’re in the hospital. You fainted in my lab and I was lucky enough to find you and bring you here. How are you feeling?”

“I’m…I’m scared, Uncle Jack. I want out of this bed; I want to out of this room!”

“We can’t do that sweetie. You came across something that should not have been messed with.”

“I want out here! I want my mommy and daddy, RIGHT NOW!!!”

“Calm down Mary. We’re here.” Dr. Hermann replied as he and his wife enter the hospital room.

“MOM, DAD!!! I’m so happy you came!”

“Evelyn, would you mind looking after Mary while I talk to Jack for a moment?”

“Of course, honey.” Evelyn replied as she comforts her youngest child.

“Jack…what the hell happened in there?" Dr. Ibermann asks, "How is that we have enough security in our lab to keep out any possible intruder, but my six-year-old daughter is able walk right in and come into contact with this object?”

“I have no possible explanation for this, Hermann," Jack answered, "It all happened so fast that after she touched the tablet that flash went off causing her collapse to the ground. Perhaps if I run few tests tha-”

“No you will not, Jack!" Ibermann exclaimed, "I will not let you test anything on her. My children are off limits to you, got that?”

“Mommy," Mary said, "I don’t feel so good. I feel…funny.”

“Oh my god," Evelyn replied, "OH GOD! Her arm is twitching and disappearing! Jack, do something, quick!”

“Stand aside Evelyn, let me check her pulse. Nurse, I need a crash cart in here with a defibrillator, stat!”

“Dammit Jack, what the hell is going on with my daughter?”

“She’s having a heart attack, Hermann.”

“A heart attack!? Mary’s only six, how is this even possi--”

*************************

“Mary…Mary?” Robert asks, “Mary! Are you alright?”

Dammit to hell, I zoned out again. I hate it when that happens every time I remember something from my past. “Yeah, I’m fine. I was just going through our plan again.”

“And what about your powers?” Robert asks continuing to be persistent.

I try my best to play it off like it’s no big deal. “Oh, you know, just doing stupid kid stuff. That’s all.”

Robert looks back at me making me feel a little awkward. I guess I’m not that great of a liar I thought I was, much like the rest of my family. “Sure…so are you sure you can handle this?”

My god, Robert and his questions. It’s like he has to know every little detail about everything I do when I’m not around him. “Yes Rob, I know exactly what to look for. Now can we please get this over with?” I ask him in an annoyed tone. As Robert makes his way into the main lobby, creating quite a stir for the security goons, I make myself scarce by turning invisible and head towards the stairwell treading very quietly upstairs.

Ten floors later, I exit the stairwell and make my way across a floor filled with cubicles. Not much catches my eye except of one office room in particular. The reason is not what’s inside the room, but who. In this case it’s Dr. Barry Edison, the psychologist of Displace Enterprise and one of the very few people who has the information I am looking for. He works late, as always, handling all of the employee’s psych evaluations. “Hello Dr. Edison, I believe you and I have an appointment.”

“Indeed we do,” Dr. Edison replied, “When word came around that daddy’s little girl became emancipated, I knew it was only a matter of time before you came knocking on my door. I bet it has been awhile since you made an appointment with a psychologist, am I right?”

Twelve Years Ago:

Mary sits calmly in her chair as she looks over to Jack Crawford with a notepad and pen in hand.

“Hello Mary," Jack says, "How are feeling today?”

“I’m fine…I guess." Mary replied, "I still take my medicine everyday, for the last year, if that’s what you’re wondering.”

“That’s good to hear and—"

“Uncle Jack, can you stop with the questions? I really don’t like too many questions.”

“Ok Mary, no questions. But I feel that you have something you want to get off your chest.”

“I do. It’s about what happened to me last year.”

“Go on Mary," Jack replied as he leans in closer, "Tell me why you went in there. No one will judge you for your actions.”

“I went into your lab, ‘cause…it talked to me. The funny voice talked to me in my brain.”

“What did the funny voice say?”

“He said things like, ‘Hello Mary’ and ‘I’m lonely in here.’ I was curious so he helped me sneak in that night. After I saw the funny voice talking from in his metal thing, he told me to touch him.”

“I’m sorry, but did you say that he wanted you to touch him?”

“Yeah, that’s what the funny voice said. I laid my hand on his shiny pictures and he felt…happy.”

“Hmm…that is interesting.”

“Then he said, ‘Thank you’ and made me felt happy too with the bright light.”

“I see what you mean. Your father and I have been there before.”

“That bright light was like nothing I've ever felt before. It made me more happy than I ever was and...I feel like I want more of the light.”

*************************

Jesus Christ, what is it with people wanting to know everything about you? I feel like that there’s a spotlight lighting up directly over my head. “You got that right, doc.” I merely replied as I try to keep my cool. “Now I need to know something that only a handful of my father’s sleeper spies know. Where is The Town?”

“Ah yes, the infamous town that your father had built from the ground up.” Dr. Edison replied as he gets out of his chair knowing full well that he will make a break for it. “Unfortunately I cannot divulge that kind of information to exiles, like you…GUARDS!!!” I turn around only to see two of Displace’s finest taking me down by surprise as they wrap their arms around me as if I was a stuffed animal they won at the carnival.

Waiting to Fade...

     Invisibility: superior (rank 2)

Well this is embarrassing. I am only ten feet away from getting my answers and what do I do? I get manhandled by a pair of buffed up Blue Brothers. Dr. Edison looks on as he smiles politely at me. “Now now, Mary. Struggling will only make things worse for yourself. I recommend that you should relax as I contact your father.”

*************************

Six Years Ago:

Inside the Compound's training facility, Mary gets into a heated argument with her older brother.

“You hear me kid," Patrick exclaimed, "If you pull that shit again, I will bring dad down here.”

“Eat me, Patrick!" Mary answers back, "I’m thirteen now, and I ain’t a kid anymore. So why don’t you just leave me alone and let me finish my training.”

As the two nearly get into a fight, Stephanie breaks them up. “That’s enough from the both of you! Patrick go back to your post, and Mary, come with me!”

“I appreciate the help Steph," Mary replied, "But I think I could handle our idiot brother on my own.”

“Hey, I’m your big sister. I’ll always have your back. Any way, you need to show these jerks what you’re made of.”

“I’m trying but every time I try to sneak pass these Trackers; they seem to get the jump one me. How am I supposed to get by them?”

“You want my advice? Every time you use your invisibility, you tend to move a little too quickly thus making your powers to go visible. Take your time and pace yourself, otherwise it’ll turn off the moment you start running.”

“Thanks sis, I’ll take your advice. Wish me luck.”

“Oh and don’t forget that you can be seen on infrared.”

“Right, I almost forgot.”

*************************

“Of course,” I say to myself, “That’s what I should have done.”

Dr. Edison becomes perplexed as he looks over to my direction. “And what is that, exactly?”

I look back up at the shrink as I stay completely still. “This!” My body turns invisible, to the naked eye, as I slip out of the guard’s grasp and sneak by them at a slow and steady pace. They scurry like panicked rats as I make things even more interesting by turning off the lights.

Now the darkness sets in and Dr. Edison becomes scared shitless as I see him pulling a revolver from out of his desk drawer. “Where the hell is she? That’s it, I’m calling for backup!” He scrambles for the phone, but before he could respond he hears the bad news from downstairs. “Damn it to hell! Security is preoccupied with a nine-foot werewolf in the lobby! She planned all of this just to get to me.” You got that right, genius.

...and Float Away

     Phasing: superior (rank 2)

I see one of the guards beginning to sweat from his forehead. “So what do we do now?” The guard asks as he looks over to Dr. Edison. “We can’t stay on this floor and who knows how many of those freaks are down there.”

“There’s a helicopter at the top of this building. I know how to fly it, but only if you get me there first.” Dr. Edison sure is a quick thinker. But then again, I bet it comes with the territory with shrinks like him. I see them make their way to elevator with quick haste. I could easily cut them off at the top floor. Just need a little improvising by phasing through the top of these ceilings. Lucky for me not only could my body phase through a lot of things, but it can also make my molecules lighter making me quicker and faster to get.

*************************

Three Years Ago:

Mary nods away as her trainer and a member of the Trackers, Matthew Harden, is in the middle of his speech on how to use her intangible powers.

“Although there is one catch when you become intangible, Mary.” Matthew says.

“What’s that, Mr. Harden?” Mary asks.

“Your phasing ability comes with a tradeoff. You will be faster and more agile; but you will still be vulnerable to things like energy based projectile weapons because they will disrupt molecular body.”

“Okay, but I can still hang onto people making them become intangible as well?”

“Yes, but only if they are in physical contact with you. Otherwise you’ll get them stuck in between the walls. You remember how that turned out with Gluttony?"

“I keep telling you that it was an accident. Besides Mr. Gibson was still alive by the time you guys pulled him out of that floor.”

“Nevertheless, you should always keep your powers in check. We all have a duty here to make sure that we are ready to combat any type of threats that may threaten our town.”

“I see what you mean, sir. I’ll make sure it won’t happen again.”

“That’s good to hear, Mary. Now let’s take your training back to the top again, shall we?”

*************************

“The top,” Dr. Edison exclaimed, “We finally made it to the top of this building. Now let’s get to that chopper befo--”

His sentence is cut short as I phase through the last floor of this building. “Before what,” I ask the good doctor, “Before you make a hasty departure from this city? I don’t think so. Not until I get the answers I’m looking for.” The two guards stand in front of Dr. Edison pointing their handguns in my direction. They begin unloading, round after round, but to no avail as the bullets pass right through me like water passing through my fingers. After several seconds pass, I could hear the clicking sounds in their guns running out of ammo. As they try reload I merely look at the two with nothing more than a smile on my face. “My turn.”

Dodge this Assholes!

     Acrobat: standard (rank 1)

“What are you two idiots waiting for,” Dr. Edison exclaimed, “KILL HER!”

Once more, another flurry of spent ammo comes hurtling in my direction. But this time, I decide to make things a little more interesting for them. I come charging at them, with full force, as I weave and dodge the bullets coming towards me. Some of them make their mark, but thanks to my phasing powers, they pass right through me. It’s a good thing that all of those gymnastics training, in the past, are finally paying off.

*************************

One Year Ago:

The sound of flesh and spandex can be heard, across the gymnastics room, as Mary writhes in pain and slowly gets back up. She looks over to balance beam and back at Anelle Brickman, another member of the Trackers, as she shakes her head at Mary.

“Now Mary," Anelle says, "I told you before that there’s nothing to sweat about. It’s only practice.”

“Easy for you to say, Anelle." Mary replied,"You’ve been doing this all your life, but I’ve been doing this for over two months and I still can’t get the vaults and flips right."

“You know, there is more than one way to finish the moves correctly. Tell me, when you become intangible does your whole body become lighter?”

“Yeah, but what does that have to do with gymnastics?”

“Everything. You see, the next time you’re in the air, try going intangible that way it will be a lot easier for you to execute the moves.”

“You think that’ll actually work?”

“Hey, you never know until you try it once. So what do you say?”

“Alright, I’ll give it a shot. But if I fall on my ass again, I’m gonna blame you for this.”

“Haha shut up and go break a leg out there.”

*************************

I can’t believe she was right about that. Being intangible made me a lot faster and agile than I ever was in my solid form. Now I am able to perform a whole bunch of flips, turns, and twists just like any other gymnast out there. It even comes in handy dodging two hundred pound meatheads as I move in closer avoiding their punches.

“Hold still you little bitch!” One of the guard’s shouts out.

“Alrighty then,” I say to the guard as I grab him by the shoulders, “Let’s go for a little ride.” The guard and I become intangible as we both phase through floor and downward into the lower levels.

“Jesus Christ,” Dr. Edison said, “Come on, let’s get out of here.” The two begin head out onto the rooftop where their helicopter was waiting for them on the launch pad. But they will not get far as I phase myself back up to the top floor still hot on their trail.

I'm Full of Little Surprises

     Slashing Weapon: standard (rank 1)

  • Ranged Attack

Dr. Edison scrambles into the helicopter as he tries to turn it on with desperation. “Come on, COME ON! Where are those fucking buttons?”

“I thought you knew how to fly these things?” The guard asks as he looks back only to see me walking out onto the launch pad. “Aw hell no!” The muscle bound shouts as he pulls out his gun. I’m beginning to become very tired this charade, so I might as well end this. I pull out pair of butterfly knives as I flip the blades out and throw one of them at his arm and ramming the other into his chest. He tries to fight it for a few seconds, but eventually the guard collapses to the ground taking in his last breath.

“You bitch!” Dr. Edison shouts as he catches me by surprise by pistol whipping the side of my face. His revolver pretty much did the job as I collapse to the ground feeling disoriented. The good doctor looks down at me and back over to his dead bodyguard raising his eyebrows in awe. “Wow…I look at this and I can’t help but think you have the kind of greatness in you. And I look at you and you’re no different than the idiots that show up at my sessions. Totally lost and looking for answers in all of the wrong places.”

Can’t think straight nor can I focus in on my powers. I have to play this out a little bit. “You sure about that? Because my friend tells me you have all the info on everyone.”

“You mean that freak downstairs,” Dr. Edison jokes, “Oh please; you’re getting your information from people that you hardly know. What kind of a person is that?”

*************************

Seven Months Ago:

Mary, along with every other member of the Trackers, wait inside the gym as they await some sort of big announcement. The goth plays with her knife until she looks over to her friend, Amanda, and taps her shoulder

“I don’t know why we’re all in this gym to begin with," Mary says, "I don’t suppose you know what’s going on Amanda.”

“From I hear," Amanada replied, "It’s that there’s this new guy coming in today and he might become the newest member of the Trackers.”

“Is he hot?” Mary asks.

“I don’t know, but I did hear that he is big. Wait a second; I thought you already have a boyfriend Mary.”

“I do, it’s just that it never hurts to wonder. You what I mean?”

“Yeah I bet you like to mix things up," Adam says over hearing their conversation, "Ya freaky goths tend to do that weird shit sometimes.”

“Fuck off, Adam," Mary exclaimed, "You don’t know anything about me.”

Adam chuckles as he slides his chair over to her. “I know that you spend most of your time playing with knives like any other goth.”

“I don’t play, I practice. Wraith and R. T. have been teaching me how to handle myself in melee combat. Needless to say, I’ve been doing pretty well at it.”

“Whatever you say, but practice ain’t nothin’ compared to the real thing. You have to be up close and personal when it comes down to it.”

“Don’t worry," Mary says, "I can handle that.”

“Yeah…we’ll see," Adam replied as he sees something at the far end of the room, "Oh hey, here comes the new guy coming in with Stephanie.”

“Well I guess I was right about him being big," Amanda says, "What do you think Mary?”

“He is big Amanda…and kind of cute," Mary replied, "In a giant werewolf kind of way that is.”

*************************

“A damn good one,” I reply back, “Just like me.” I start to regain my senses and pull out a long dagger stabbing Dr. Edison in his arm. He cries out in pain dropping his gun. It’s high time that I end this right now as I drag him to the edge of the roof. “Now listen up, doc. I want to know were The Town is along with any other contacts that my father has on the outside.”

“Alright,” Dr. Edison replied, “Alright, I’ll tell you where it is. It’s in the Falkland Islands and I don’t know where exactly, but it’s there. And check my left breast pocket in my suit. There’s a flash drive with everyone that your father has as a mole.” I follow his instructions, very carefully, as I find the flash drive in his pocket. “So what’s your plan? Head back home and hope that your father will take you back? I will tell you that it will not work.”

“I wasn’t thinking about that,” I say to the Dr. Edison placing the flash drive in my pocket, “I plan on destroying everything that he built...this includes killing all of his spies in every organization.” Dr. Edison eyes begin to widen as I pull the dagger out of him and kick the prick off of the building. I watch as he fell a hundred stories to the street. The people on the ground floor began to shriek and scream as the good doctor is spread across half a block.

"Mary," Robert says as he talks to me through an earpiece, "Mary what the hell happened up there? I just saw a body fall onto the street. Are you alright?"

"I'm fine," I replied, "Dr. Edison jumped off of the building. I never seen anything like it. But I did manage to find something before he went. It could be useful, I'll be down in a sec." As I begin to head towards the door, I hear a whirling sound and look up only to see a security camera. I merely smile as I talk into the camera and pull out another knife, “One down, a hundred more to go." After saying those words, I quickly throw my weapon into the lens takings out the entire device.
