Mr. Graves

I remember the first time I saw him. I thought he was just another drunken bum without a home, curled up on a bench in that run-down little park off Foxtail Street. He was there for nearly a week, and when he was awake he did little more than mumble to himself. There had been quite a few people like him showing up in recent days; the last war had destroyed many lives, and left many more destitute. I had joined with several other families living in Lowtown; we were banding together as a community to help protect ourselves from the scum that the police didn't catch. We kept an eye on him, but he never moved from that spot... until one day, when my little girl came running home. I was worried at first that something bad might have happened to her, but she called for me to come see Foxtail Park. I walked down the street with her, and when I saw it my breath was taken away. Trees, once half-dead and withering, had been restored to full green life; several children chattered away happily around the old swingset that now ran like the day it was built. The fountain in the center of the park bubbled forth with pure water for the first time in months. And next to the fountain, in the middle of a growing crowd of people, was what appeared to be a small house, with a front porch. There were two chairs, and on one sat Steve Warren, the closest person we had to a community leader. On the other chair sat that man, draped in tattered clothes and disheveled hair, smiling.

I had the chance to talk with him for a few minutes the first time we met in person. At one point I asked him, "Why have you come to help us, anyway? Not that I don't welcome your presence and assistance, but, I can't help but be curious as to your motives." He furrowed his brow for a bit before answering. "Hmm... I suppose you could say there are many reasons why; a desire to use the power I was given to aid others, a high regard for human life and happiness, sympathy for those in dire need.... several other ideals surrounding a good-natured spirit, perhaps." I shook my head, indicating I'd asked the wrong question. "Well, what I meant was, why are you helping us in particular? There are many more important people that live in other sections of Khazan, who have wealth far beyond our own to protect or power much greater than ours to wield. I mean, you just don't see a member of the Sentinels of Liberty and Justice sitting in on our community meetings to help us decide how to raise the attendance at the monthly pot-luck dinner or how to handle the recent vandalism incidents in the neighbourhood." He started to chuckle, then let out a hearty laugh. "Why, isn't that reason enough for me to be here? I believe you've answered your own question, my friend!"

A Bit of the Old Magic

     Matter Animation: Ultimate

  • Ranged and Melee Attack

Ever since someone first asked him the question, the kids often press him to tell again of where he came from. He describes to them a fantastic dimension where even simple mortals could create life, worlds, even universes by mere thought alone. The stories he tells of the creations made there can keep even the adults entertained for hours. But, he never says much about how he wound up in Khazan, or why he can't go back. Only that he's here now, and that while his power is limited here, he can still do quite a bit to help our little community. If he tells the truth, the restoration of Foxtail Park is but the beginning of his abilities...

A Universe Away

     Force Field: Ultimate

  • Reinforced Defenses

Some say he is selfish for not helping us more. Many, like myself, understand that he wants us to do for ourselves when possible, and that he will only step in to assist when it is beyond our power to overcome troubles that come to the lives in Lowtown Khazan. Whatever your opinion of him, he refuses to change his ways. Those that have tried to force a free handout from him by any means have found him difficult to approach. Words of deception fail to reach his ears, for he is too far away to hear them. Weapons of violence give out, unable to cross the gaping chasms to reach him. The shortest distance between two points is a line, but the quickest path to reach him is an unselfish tounge and a heart without malice.

Lights Against the Darkness

     Tactician: Standard

As he helped us, giving us advice on how to make our community live and thrive, others came to hear of the flourishing Foxtail Community. Some of them thought they might take advantage of our good fortune; if the Wizard could not be approached directly, why not attack his direct benefactors? When he learned of this new plight, he assured us that he would do everything in his power to keep us safe. What we didn't know was that he would do much more by teaching us how to protect our own; the gift of teaching is sometimes greater than any force or power...

Like the Wind

     Teleportation: Standard

"Please, I only ask of you one thing: do not become dependent on me to be with you forever. I was not here for aeons, and now I have been with you a short time. It may be that our paths are to cross but for the lifespan of the blades of grass, but hopefully I will be able to remain a while longer. But I say to you, one day there will come a time when troubles will come and I will not be there to help you. So you must build and plan and be able to defend yourselves when that day comes, for I am like the wind, blowing in one direction and then the next, and then there is no wind at all..."

Phantom Leader

     Commander: Superior

Steve Warren was and still is the leader of our community. He oversees weekly and monthly meetings, makes important decisions in how Foxtail Community grows, and helps to make sure that everyone stays safe out on the streets of Khazan. But when dark forces draw near, the kind that overwhelm mortal men like massive waves crushing small sails; that is when The Wizard steps forward. And we are there, like phantoms behind him, surrounding the enemy, waiting for a chance to assist our leader in battle through cunning plan or forceful attack. Once the police rarely had time to bother with helping us; now they rarely have the need to.

Now We Are Strong

     Commander: Superior

  • Ranged Attack Only
  • Area Affect
  • Multi-Attacks

We have come a long way since we first found the sleeping drunkard on the park bench. We have learned to help others and still keep one eye open for pocketknives. Working together we can stop a shoplifter or a thief before he is halfway down the next block. With him as our leader we can drive out the shadows that once loomed over Foxtail Community. And most importantly, we have learned that it is our own courage and love for one another as a community that makes us strong.

Blink of an Eye

     Super Speed: Supreme

"Ahh, an afternoon to relax..." The Wizard sat in a chair on his front porch, watching the serenity of the transformed Foxtail Park on a lazy afternoon. Steve Warren sat across from him, also taking the opportunity of a day without troubles. "Not slowing down, are you old man?" They laughed. When he first arrived it seemed he was everywhere all at once, a veritable well-spring of energy. As they talked, a few small figures crept up behind the house in the Park... around to the railing, just out of sight of the two men on the porch. A hand reached up to the Wizard's chair... before Steve knew what was happening, the Wizard spun around and out of his chair, catching up one figure in each arm in one swift motion, "Gotcha!" He then set them down, and the kids ran away, giggling and laughing excitedly. The two men laughed and watched them go, "Slowing down, Steve? Not in the least!"
