Buzz Line

Since June 31st 2007, there have been thousands of sightings of a mysterious man covered in hornets, a giant man sized wasp, peculiar gatherings of different insects species and unexpected insect attacks occurring far from the organism's usual range throughout the entire Yucatan Peninsula. From the start, casual observances by outsiders suggested relation between the events and according to locals they are all one in the same: La Línea Zumbida.

Less popularly known as Rey Bicho, the female alias is preferred. The culprit is believed to be a man but the documented insects are overwhelmingly female and if some witness accounts are to be believed, Rey himself can transform into an insect, which tend to vary in species and size in accounts but are always female morphs.

Many complaints come from Bee Keepers, who insist their hives are being stolen by Zumbida or at least accuse him of causing the bees to behave abnormally. Visitors around La Venta tend to claim witness to Zumbida bringing forth swarms of electric-light bugs or hornets from thin air, which disappeared back into ether as quickly as they came.

The Vespidae family is most strongly associated with Zumbida but it appears his limits in insect manipulation are hardly limited by accepted taxonomy. The only common theme between all attributed to him through the Yucatan reports are that they are flying invertebrates whose wings give off a distinctive buzz.

Zumbida is not a mere curiosity or folk figure in the region but a very real object of fear, hatred and paranoia. Continual food shortages have been blamed on his disruption of pollination, as are disturbing accounts of property destruction and theft. More than a few fatalities also have alleged links to Zumbida, suffocation through orifice invasion and completely liquefied muscle tissues being commonly used in victim autopsies.

Impossible as it seems, Zumbida has been described as taking the form of insects himself, abnormally large insects equal to the average man in mass that do not suffer the logistical or respiratory problems one would expect a terrestrial invertebrate of such size to suffer. As absurd as it seems, it seems increasingly absurd to ignore the reports coming out of the peninsula, as consideration of the Zumbida figure makes many of our more baffling cases of late much easier to put together. We can no longer completely dismiss Zumbida's existence nor continue to write him off as someone else's problem.

From these accounts we can even discern methods of combating him. As unfortunate as the fire of Villahermosa was from it we learn of Zumbida's strong aversion to flames and smoke. It should also be noted he has never appeared wherever the day's high did not exceed 5 degrees Celsius. Even if one refuses to accept any Zumbida accounts as genuine, one cannot deny the very idea of him is having a detrimental psychological effect on our citizens and our personnel. At the very least I suggest we purchase extra raid cans to help boost employee morale.

Rey Bicho, the one they now call La Línea Zumbida, from the day he could form coherent sentences he would never accept a regular name for himself and he was always self-absorbed and discontent. No one else saw it at first but it always disturbed me, since the first day his parents introduced their newborn son to the rest of the congregation. It was all the more obvious to me since satisfaction with one's lot and brotherly love were the preacher's most common sermons and it was obvious he disdained the very ideas. To point this out to anyone only got me scolded however, insistence that I focus on the lesson and not on judgment.

Rey's, Zumbida's, greatest pursuit was always control. He showed affection to people to the extent he could get them to do what he wanted. When it was clear someone, or something, was beyond his influence his treatment of them would always be dismissive...unless he could find an excuse for slander or violence. People were always awestruck by his love of wasps and the bug's seeming love for him but it was only love for control. He thought about wasps what do and they did, he controlled them to a far greater extent than he could even his fellow human beings.

He used to kill animals with discretion only for how far he could go before his reputation would plummet. There were always excuses, "hunting", "accidents", "defense" but to me it always seemed like another way to assert his will. Maybe he felt they were harder to control than people, that he had to find a new way of "controlling" their lives. I only took a psych 101 class to be honest, but it does not surprise me that he has retreated from society to play with his wasps. None of the crimes attributed to him shock me much either.

I would rather not guess at what Rey's, Zumbida's, long term goals might be and I really do expect him to have any. But if it helps your investigation, I suppose his contentment with commanding wasps will wane and he will again try to command other things and other people.

Weakness: Thermal

La Línea Zumbida's powers primarily revolve around transforming into and controlling insects which have a hard time controlling their internal temperatures and prefer certain, stable air temperatures to aid them in flight. Overall the bugs and Zumbida himself in bug form have a lower tolerance to thermal attacks and they mobility is significantly altered by sudden changes in air temperature.

Some of his forms, such as that of the Cicada in hot weather, do adjust well to unfavorable climates better than others but these tend to be least dangerous overall.

La Línea Zumbida can overcome the commands certain insects around him have already received and convince them to obey him. Other people also found him persuasive, but to a much lesser extent.

La Línea Zumbida can turn into as many flying bugs as equal to his human form's weight, in this sense they seem to come out of nowhere. He can retake his human form from these bugs as well, and so to nowhere they seem to return. If some of the bugs he generates are too damaged to work with Zumbida can remake his human body using flying insects he did not create but took control of.

La Línea Zumbida's creature form can range from the size expected of a bug to a size expected of an adult man. Becoming a larger than natural bug has little consequences as far movement, breathing and simple body support go but reduces the number of bugs he can produce for his swarms.
