The Rookie

They say that unhappy children

Crying in the night

Call upon the pale lady

That gives them all a fright

If their calls for freedom

Are just and true

Their lives she will take

Their sprits she’ll undo

So be careful what you wish for

Or she’ll come knocking on your door

I try and cover my ears but I can’t stand it. They keep screaming. Screams no one should ever hear. It’s not a yell or a cry for attention. It’s sadness, felt by youth, purest of emotion. There’s no context or rationale when a child is sad. Sometimes it’s because they didn’t get a toy or couldn’t stay up late. Other times there’s abuse, or neglect or people being mean to them and you know that cycle of negativity is going to continue. For some kids there’s no way out and no chance at being normal. I guess I wouldn’t normally be so invested in all this except I can’t help but hear them. The ones with legitimate issues I want to help. I think I’m the only one who’s listening.

It will be another sleepless night for me as I step into my long flowing dress. I try to ignore all the extra noise, the extra cries and the kids sobbing in their beds or moping around in their heads. I try to ignore the dreams and nightmares and pin point a single cry. One off into the murky distance blocked off by a sea of tears. I can almost see her now, clutching her teddy bear, cheeks crusted with salty tears. She wishes to disappear completely. She is the one that will lead the group tonight.

I stepped out onto the street as I looked up at the full bright moon. Tonight is most certainly a night to celebrate the freedom from the tyranny of life. I skip down the sidewalk and flick my fingers. The ghost flame is a light, the cries have been heard. It’s time to herd the lost and guide them to salvation.

Ghost Flame

     Fire: standard (rank 1)

Ghost Flame! Ghost Flame!

Flicker away!

Light up the darkness

Until the break of day

Bring the sad and the lonely

Like moths to a light

Guide us you will

Through the dark scary night

And when we reach our destination

There will be no hesitation

The Visitor

Holly’s house was an innocuous town home in the suburbs. It’s the sort of home where a new family would start their lives as a jumping off point to the journey that is raising a family. Sadly these walls do more than shelter. They hide the discord between a man and woman who no longer love each other. They keep out those who would try and help them make amends. The walls cover up years of alcohol abuse, physical abuse and mental abuse. Not even the windows would allow you to see the girl who hid in the unfinished basement crying tears of pain and the fall out when she is discovered.

Walls aren’t a problem for me. They may impede others but for me they’re nothing but decoration. Placing my hand against the door I push through as my body slides inside the house with ease. It all looks so normal which makes it even scarier. The house is impeccable, no mess, no fuss. The walls aren’t damaged and the owners have a real eye for design. The house was a thick veneer that they slathered over rotted wood. I start to make my way up the stairs.

When I pass through her bedroom door I see her on her bed. She’s sleeping but not. Inside her mind she’s having a horrific night mare, one that I can see beyond my own natural vision. She wants to cry and she wants to wake up but she’s too tired to do so. I stand over her, watching, my soft hand touching her forehead as I try and coax her through the darkness, my mind touching hers as I try to bring her back to the waking world.

Cries in the Night

     Telepathy: superior (rank 2)

In the night when you sleep

All that’s real is not what it seems

Be it good nights or nightmare she will see

The things that go on in your dreams

From dark scary monsters, ghouls and ghosts

She will guide you through the dark sea

Entering into the morning light

Where you'll eternally be happy

And if the real world is giving you too much pain

She will pierce the darkness with her ghost flame

Walking Together…

Holly and Merdith were getting along as I exited Jamie’s house. The young boy was shy to join with the two girls but I gave him a look. We weren’t in the best part of town. Jamie was from a typical single mother broken home that I wish wasn’t some cheesy stereotype. Still I gave the boy a smile as the two girls giggled in their pajamas.

“Don’t worry. Just a few more lost souls and we’ll be off.”

As we walked through an old park the kids remained in their rows, side by side as Holly pulled on my dress.

“Were you the one talking to me in my nightmares?”

I looked back at her as I said “yes, yes I was.”

“Why?”

“Because there’s far too much suffering in this world and you kids shouldn’t have any of it. You know my head is for some reason wired to other people’s heads. Adults I can ignore but children, well, your cries are loudest. They’re a sadness I simply can’t tune out. So that’s why I’m here. I heard your cries for help and I want to when no one else will.”

Suddenly I felt a rush of kids hugging around my legs. Looking down at the little tykes I almost started to weep as Molly looked up at me.

“Thank you” she said.

… In Two Rows …

     Mind Control: standard (rank 1)

In the darkness she will lead

Through rain and snow and sleet

Their magical journey will soon end

Their hardships they will beat

Molly, Meredith, Jamie and John

Kathy, Harold, Danny and Bret

Now they were brothers and sisters

That they had never met

Perfect children, standing in line, marching in their shoes

Obedient children, stamping along, in rows of two by two

… Side by Side

Force of Will: superior (rank 2)

We marched through the night. It was a long one as I hadn’t picked up eight children in a very long time. As I looked back I could see them. They were getting tired. One proud marchers had a hard time keeping their heads up as I flicked my fingers making the ghost flame burn brighter.

“Come on children. We’re almost there.”

Merdith whined out as she said “can we stop, I’m tired.”

Bret added “and can we have snacks.”

I stopped in my tracks and turned around looking at the now slightly disjointed row of children.

“After tonight you won’t have to worry. You won’t have to care about sleep or snacks. You will just be, off somewhere else where children are always happy. We just need to hike a few more steps. Do you think you can do that?”

I stood there, they kids looked at me until Holly finally spoke up.

“Yes we can.”

I patted her on the head as I said “there we go, now let’s march along.”

Taken Away

     Teleportation: supreme (rank 3)

Through the night they had an adventure

Leaving their lives that they despised

They made it to a rolling green hill

And watched the morning sun rise

Fade held her hand up

She tried to keep her emotions inside

But as she waved at them

Her eyes started to cry

The children waved, as their bodies started to fade away

Gone forever, their parent wept, never seen since that day
