ab•sinthe also ab•sinth ( b s nth) - n.-

2. A green liqueur having a bitter anise or licorice flavor and a high alcohol content, prepared from absinthe and other herbs, and now prohibited in many countries because of its toxicity.

In Canton of Neuchâtel, Switzerland, there is a legend of Adrian, a town brewer, who had been possessed by a dream. A dream of the girl. Late at night he would toss and turn, trying to go to bed. So he could see her. In the day all he did was look at his wife in disgust, fore she was nothing compared to the girl who lived in his mind.

When he laid his head down to bed, and he finally closed his eyes for his nightly rest, he would see her in a dark enclosed forest. He would lean against the tree that stood, erect, in the center of the black tinted forest and wait for her.

He had no desire to more away from that spot. He had no longing outside waiting for her. This was the highest point of his existence. Waiting for her.

Then his moment would come, where she would appear behind him, draw close to his ear and whisper, “Kjærlighet” (love). He would turn around to see the goddess, with her pale greenish skin, jet black hair, and her stunning green eyes.

He would fall to his knees and weep at her beauty. She would come down to his level and kiss him.

She would whisper him many things as he laid his head in her lap, she would say things like “Frihet” and “ Frelser” ( Freedom, Savior). She would pet his hair, and look into his eyes. Pleading with him, silently. Adrian knew what she wanted. She wanted out. She wanted to be free.

Eventually Adrian would wake from paradice and scream and curse his life. He would scowled God and hit the walls in frustration.

The Green Fairy of his dreams took control of all aspects of his life. Even his profession. He strived to make a drink that would pay homage to her, a drink that would mimic her presence. He strived for years, but no combination of ingredients would come out that special color of green that she emitted when she was with him.

Then one night, in his dream, she came to him, a bit differently this time. Instead of sneaking up behind him, she walked straight up to him and picked a plant that as at his feet and handed it to him. He looked at it, grande wormwood.

He looked up at her. She looked at him and nodded. He knew what to do. He woke himself up, the first time in years, and went to work. He rushed outside and ran to the woods. He knew where to find the substance. There was a patch of wormwood, there!

His wife awoke the next morning to see him at work, brewing and mixing.

“[Found inspiration, my dear?]” she asked him.

“[Silence you hideous cow],” he scolded her. She began to weep and ran upstairs. He didn’t care. He added the sweet fennel to his new mixture. There it was! The perfect color green! The color that reminded him of her.

He looked it and immediately broke out in a cold sweat. This would kill his pain. He took a fast swig, downing the whole substance. Immediately the effect took hold, he dropped his glass and looked up widely and-

There she was. Standing in front of him clear as day. He went up to her, slowly, shifting from side to side, not believing that the drink was able to summon her and bring her here.

He touched her face and he went in for a kiss, a real kiss, but then her eyes went black, jet black and he fell to the ground dead.

The towns people came to his shop the next day to find him and his wife dead. The people paid their respects by raiding his entire shop of all of its beverages. They were about to leave, their arms filled as full as they could be with liquor and other alcoholic drinks. When a few of them noticed, a half full pitcher on a table. They had never seen anything like it before. It was bright green, emitting colorful light.

One man cautiously took a sip and it was delicious! He dropped everything else and made sure to keep the pitcher all for himself. He eventually took it to a rival brewer who was able to replicate the drink. It became known as Absinthe. And its fame grew and it spread all over the world.

But besides a hangover and a headache, Absinthe has another side effect. Even to this day when people drink Absinthe (even in its diluted, present day form), people still see visions of a Green Fairy. And as her legend grew, and she was incorporated in paintings and writings, the memory of her grew stronger and stronger. To this day she grows stronger.

Saturday Night, Evansville, Indiana, Present Day:

A group of wild teenagers all sat in the living room of Cait’s apartment, taking turns smoking the same joint. The communal weed made its way to Geoff, who coughed as he took it from Aaron. He inhaled lightly and coughed again, “I love this shit, bra, where’d you get it?”

“Umm,” Cait laughed obnoxiously, “From under my carpet?”

“Mmhmm,” Geoff smiled, “Carpet weed…” the group laughed harder than they should have.

“Oh **** it,” Julia threw the pillow on her lap away and flung herself upon Aaron, “Take me now, Aaron!” The two began to make out heavily as the rest of them continued to get higher and higher.

The only teen not participating, sat in the corner in with an uncomfortable look on his face.

“Cody,” Cait swayed as she tried to get his attention, “Come over here.”

“No, no,” Cody shook his head, “I’m fine.”

“But you’re not having fun,” she pouted, “Common over here!”

“When did you say that girl was going to get here?” he asked changing subjects.

“Abby?” Cait said after a pause, “Abby will be here soon, here have some of this.” She extended her arm and tried to hand it to him.

Then there was a knock at the door. “I’ll get it!” Cody rushed to the door and opened it (which was good because the rest of them really couldn’t walk straight anyway).

He reached the door and opened it quickly. A lovely girl with jet black hair, stunning green eyes and a short green dress stood there, “Hello.” She said coldly, with a cold half-smile.

“Hiya!” Cody blurted out, trying to keep his tongue in his mouth.

“Can I come in?” she asked.

“Yeah, sure, sure!” She scissor stepped into the apartment looking around the ceiling.

“Nice house, Cait,” the new girl went over to the host of this party bending over to give her a hug. Cody looked straight up so he made sure not to sneak a peek of her up her dress.

“Hi Abby!” Cait yelled as she hugged the new girl, “I missed you so hard! Did you bring the stuff?”

“Yeah,” Abby produced a bottle from behind her back.

“Ohhh,” Cait tried to read the label of the bottle but the light it seemed to be emitting made it impossible for her to read, “What is this shit?”

“Its Absinthe,” Abby said, “Very alcoholic, very illegal.”

“Oh!” Cait clapped, “Yay! Me first!” she took the bottle and took a little swig. “Woah!” she coughed, “That’s good!”

“Me, me,” Geoff said slowly and took a drink. They passed it around the room.

Cody sighed. This girl was only interested in getting high too. He never should’ve gone to this party. He went into the other room, unseen by the others, and sat on the bed, hunched over in depression.

He sat there for a while until Abby poked her head into the room, “Hello,” she said, “Can I come in?”

“Sure,” Cody said depressed, “If you wanna.”

She strolled in bottle in hand, it had been revenged, there was only a sip left. She held it out loosely, waiting for him to take it, “Want some?”

“Nah,” Cody sighed again, “Not feelin’ it”

“Why not?” she cocked her head to the side.

“Father was a drunk,” Cody answered, “I don’t want to be like him, you know?”

“I see,” she said un-phased, placing the bottle on a nearby end table, “Good night then.” She turned around abruptly and left the room.

Cody hung his head and sighed. This girl was cold and emotionless. And it was creepy. She was gorgeous, but she just emitted this unpleasantness that covered her beauty.

Cody was lost in thought when he heard Cait’s blood curdling scream. Cody got up and ran to the door he was horrified at what he saw.

Cody watched in horror as Abby gripped Cait’s neck and lifted her into the air.

“Abby! Stop that!” Cody ran up to her and tried to pull them apart. But before he reached them, a pair of glowing wings burst out of the back of Abby’s dress, knocking Cody back. Abby looked back at Cody as he tried to get up and smirked.

She then turned back to Cait, “Why won’t you look me in the eye, little one?” Abby asked her as her transformation continued. Her skin was turning greener, her ears were getting pointy, “Look into my eyes, Cait, look at them.”

Cait avoided it as long she could, but could not do so forever. She eventually looked into the eyes of Abby, which had turned into swirling, jet black, vortexes. Cody watched in horror as (this is the best he could describe it) the life force of Cait was sucked dry out of her body and absorbed into the eyes of Abby.

“Abby what are you doing!” Cody yelled.

“I am not called Abby,” she turned and faced him, “It is pronounced Absinthe.”

She then turned toward Geoff, who was on the floor in fear, trembling. He had wet his pants and was shuddering like a mad man.

“You,” the Green Fairy looked down at him, “Come to me.”

Geoff didn’t say anything, but got up seemingly against his will, still mumbling, “Puh-puh-puh-puh…”

“Silence,” she hissed at him, but he couldn’t stop, “What could seal your mouth?” she asked out loud, “Maybe a kiss?” She then did the unexpected and grabbed him around the neck and pulled his face toward hers, kissing him. She kissed him for a long time, and when she would withdraw her head, she would come back for more.

Cody began to notice that the more she kissed him, the greener his face got. Veins also started popping out of his face and branched all out across his entire body. The more she kissed him, the worse it got. He eventually began to shrivel up and his cloths began falling off of him. Tis went on until Geoff was reduced to a green raisin.

Her wings began to flap and launched her forward toward the two teens who had just stopped making out to notice they were in peril. She grabbed Julia by the hair and flew into the air, spinning as she rose. She busted though the ceiling and ascended higher and higher.

Cody ran up to the hole in the ceiling and looked up. He could faintly see the glow, but it was way up in the sky. How had she flown up so fast-

They the crumpled body of Julia fell back through the roof and landed on Cody. With a “Ooof!” he fell back down. He looked up at the wet mass that had just landed on him. Julia had been slashed, nearly ripped apart and was bleeding all over him.

She then flew back into the room and looked at Aaron, who was also on the ground, “Child,” she asked licking her lips, “You know I’m going to kill you now right?”

Aaron nodded, blinking rapidly.

“Would you like to take it standing?” she extended a hand for him to grab.

He initially refused, and retaliated by throwing a pillow at her face and jumping up. He rushed her and tackled her down. He was laying on her awkwardly. She made no attempt to move. She just looked at him. He looked back at her and tried to throw a punch, right into her face.

She grabbed his fist in mid-air and squeezed it. Aaron cried out in pain. Cody watched in disbelief as Aaron’s fist began to deteriorate and dissipate into dust. The effect radiated up his arm until his whole body was blowing away. All that was left in his place was his cloths.

The Green Fairy than rose up and began to flap her wings, giving Cody a smug look.

Cody looked at the blood that was covering his hands and screamed at her in fury, “Why didn’t you just kill me too!”

She continued to smile and vanished from sight. Never answering his question. He looked arounf the room at his dead friends. This room…was the wrath of Absinthe…
